The last day for residents in the Purchase Area to sign up for the Low Income Heating Assistance Program is tomorrow.

West Kentucky Allied Services operates the program which helps families keep the heat on during the winter with funds from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

Friday, December 9th is the last open application day for any resident who has not yet applied.

Assistant Executive Director Tony Dowdy says 2,806 households have so far applied since the subsidy phase began November1st, and $345,115 in assistance so far distributed.

This year, the CHFS provided WKAS more than $589,000, which Dowdy says is about the same as previous years.  Any funds left over by tomorrow will be saved for the program’s crisis phase in early 2017.

“The crisis program starts January 9th and is open for all eight counties in the Purchase region, " said Dowdy. "And it will be operated until funds are depleted or until March 31st, whichever one comes first.”

The CHFS may also provide contingency funds depending on the number of crisis applicants, which Dowdy says usually exceeds those in the fall.

Applicants need to provide a copy of their most recent heating bill or rent receipt, proof of security or green card and proof of income for every household member.
