State ABC Gets Hundreds of Wet-Dry Inquiries

Officials with the Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control say the number of wet-dry elections across the state jumped almost four-fold from 2015 to 2016.

Staff in the Frankfort office routinely field hundreds of calls each week about laws regarding wet-dry votes or local alcohol ordinances. This information doesn’t surprise Kentucky Distillers Association President Eric Gregory.

“There’s always a lot of questions when you make that transition from everything from education to enforcement, taxes, revenue, so on," Gregory said. "To me, it’s no surprise that the ABC is seeing this level of calls increase because a lot is going on.”

ABC Commissioner Christine Trout says the department’s website has been updated and a system is being launched to allow people to submit their initial applications online.

She says her enforcement division has sufficient staff, training, and resources to enforce the state’s alcohol laws and make sure licensees understand those laws.
