Paul Wood reports that Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini visited Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic today, as a column of students marched on Milosevic's house. Dini said that Milosevic has promised him that there would be no crackdown on the demonstrators in Belgrade. Milosevic is said to be aware that his annulment of last month's elections, in which Opposition candidates were said to have won, is jeopardizing the standing of Serbia in the international community, but there is no sign that he has any intention of reinstating the results of that disputed election.

David Willey reports from Rome on this week's meetings between the head of the Anglican Church, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and Pope John Paul the Second. At the end of the three-day visit, neither man budged from the issues dividing the two churches, especially the issue of women priests. Both men called for new talks on how the issue could affect future dialogue about reconciliation between Anglicans and Roman Catholics.

NPR's Tom Gjelten reports on a change in plans for U.S. troops and Bosnia. Today, President Clinton announced he's willing to station 85-hundred United States soldiers in Bosnia next year even though he had promised to bring all the troops out of Bosnia in December. He said the U.S. could be part of a new NATO peacekeeping operation if that operation is clearly defined, limited and achievable.

The Senate is expected to pass a bill today that would limit marriage to heterosexual couples, and allow states not to recognize marriages between gay couples. The bill has already passed the House, and President Clinton says he will sign it. The Senate will also vote on a Democratic bill that would outlaw job discrimination against gay men and lesbians. NPR's Peter Kenyon reports.

Taking care of an aging relative is rarely an easy job. The emotional and financial strains can be enormous. Increasingly, some adult children can't or won't get involved. Often there has been a long-standing estrangement in the family, or the adult children are simply overwhelmed by the demands put on them as care-givers. NPR's David Molpus has a report on the problem of the abandoned elderly and resources which can help family members cope... even when the elderly parent or relative is exceptionally difficult.

President Clinton today promised to keep the U-S on the front lines in the fight against terrorism. He calls terror attacks one of the biggest threats to U-S and global security, and he says America must be a leader in stamping out that threat. Clinton's comments came in a speech at George Washington University. Earlier, he signed a new anti-terrorism measure. It requires sanctions against foreign companies that do substantial energy business with Libya and Iran. NPR's Mara Liasson reports.

NPR's Vicki O'Hara reports that President Clinton today ordered a controversial provision of a sanctions bill against Cuba to go into effect, but he delayed a key aspect of the law for six months. Clinton chose not to block Title Three of the Helms-Burton Law, which allows U-S citizens to sue foreign companies which invest in property expropriated by Cuba's government. But sensitive to anger among America's trading partners, Clinton suspended for six months the right to file lawsuits under Title Three.

From WHYY, NPR's Eric Westervelt reports that New Jersey is about to become the first state to replace the traditional license with one that acts like a credit card, allowing drivers to pay tolls, train and bus fares, and could eventually replace food stamps, pay for health insurance and other needs. But this new 'smart card' would also give police instant access to driving and gun records, fingerprints, medical records and insurance, and some civil libertarians are crying foul.

NPR's Martha Raddatz reports that today marks the anniversary of an event that changed the future of Bosnia. One year ago, a mortar shell exploded in a crowded marketplace. 37 civilians died. The massacre was the catalyst that convinced NATO to be more aggressive. The resulting NATO air strikes against Bosnian Serb military positions continued until all three warring factions in the former Yugoslavia agreed to establish a peace process.

NPR's Ted Clark reports that the Clinton administration says new US air attacks on Iraq are still a possibility after its recent buildup in the Gulf, but it maintains such renewed attacks will depend on the behavior of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. In keeping alive the possibility of air attacks in Iraq, the administration has denied that the grand coalition that fought Saddam Hussein five years ago over his invasion of Kuwait is now in total disarray.
