Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and members of the public are attending memorial services today for comrades killed 28 years ago while returning from Egypt.
On December 12th, 1985, 248 soldiers in the 101st and eight crew members aboard Arrow Air Flight 1285 died when their plane went down a short distance from Gander International Airport in Newfoundland, Canada. The soldiers were on their way home from a peacekeeping mission in the Sinai desert. Canadian officials later determined the crash was caused by icing.
A service was held this morning at Fort Campbell with another scheduled for 2:30 this afternoon in Hopkinsville.
