Massac County Courthouse Listed among Endangered Historic Places

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

An Illinois non-profit advocacy group for historic preservation released their twenty-first list of the most endangered historic places in the state.

The Massac County Courthouse is among the listings. According to the release, it would cost three-hundred-thousand dollars to remedy immediate problems at the deteriorating courthouse and 5 million to rehabilitate the building.

Landmarks Illinois President Bonnie McDonald says the list raises awareness of the need to restore historic places and can encourage developers to invest.

“Well people have deep ties to a place. You think of how your memory is tied it’s usually tied to the place where the thing happened. We do believe community's collective memory is housed in these places and it enables us to tell important stories,” McDonald said.

Mcdonald says there was a trend in this year’s nominations of publicly owned and institutionally owned buildings. For a full list visit Landmarks.org.
