OVC Tournament Underway, Racers Play Friday

ovcsports.com

As the Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball tournament begins Wednesday in Nashville, the Murray State Racers are enjoying a double bye and won't play until the semifinals Friday.

The Racers are seeded second in the tournament after going 13-3 in conference play and winning the East division.

One OVC loss came in Nashville against Belmont University – who they are poised to meet in Saturday’s OVC championship if both teams win Friday. Murray State coach Steve Prohm says a great rivalry is taking shape with the teams.

“We’ve played them three times, and it’s 243-243,” Prohm said. “Every game has come down to the last possession. That’s just unbelievable.”

Belmont won the OVC last year, defeating Murray in the championship 70-68. The teams were also seeded first and second in the tournament last year.

Two Murray State players received All-OVC honors Tuesday. Freshman guard Cam Payne was named to the All-OVC First Team, as well as OVC Freshman of the Year. Junior forward Jarvis Williams was named to the OVC Second Team.

The Racers' game Friday will be televised on ESPNU and tips at 9 p.m. If they win Friday, the championship begins at 6 p.m. Saturday afternoon and will air on ESPN2.
