Media Release: WKMS News Wins Five First Place Awards

The Kentucky Associated Press awarded WKMS five first place radio broadcaster awards of excellence this year. Radio stations across the Commonwealth participated in the 2014 Kentucky Associated Press Awards competition.

In the radio division, WKMS News Director Chad Lampe won first place for Best Continuing Coverage with Cocktail Party Leads to Public Scrutiny at Murray State. Whitney Jones won first place for Best Short Light News Feature with Murray High School Ghost Out Warns Against Drunken Driving. Chad Lampe and Austin Ramsey won first place for Best Special- Series/Documentary with Meet West Kentucky Coal Miners. News and Documentary Producer Todd Hatton received an honorable mention for Best Long Light News Feature with John Prine and Paradise (KY) Lost.

In the college division, student reporter Austin Ramsey won first place for Best Feature Story Radio with Children, Volunteers Find Hope in Special Advocate Programs. Student reporter John Null won first place for Best News Story Radio with 2014 US Senate Race Headlines 133rd Fancy Farm Picnic. Null also won a cash award for achieving Best of Show in the college radio division.

“These first place awards validate hours of precise news production,” says Station Manager Kate Lochte, “and the result is excellent broadcast service for our listening communities.”

"For a small shop like ours, it is a tremendous honor to receive these awards," said Chad Lampe. "It's also important to note that listener donations keep our reporters in the field."

The WKMS News team that Lampe oversees includes News and Documentary Producer and local Morning Edition Host Todd Hatton and WKMS News reporters Rob Canning, Lance Dennee, Parker Franklin, Whitney Jones, John Null, Troy Taylor, and John Walker. New Media and Promotions Coordinator Matt Markgraf manages the station's online content and public safety emergency information. WKMS reports news for southernmost Illinois, western Kentucky and northwest Tennessee.
