Awarded Best Americana Band of the Year at the Tennessee Music Awards in 2017 and finalists of the 2018 WKMS Battle of the Bands, local favorites, The Old Spirits, visit Sounds Good to discuss their upcoming album and plans for the new year.
The Old Spirits, based out of Paris, Tennessee, is composed of Evan Dodd (guitar and vocals), Samuel Parker (bass), Dustin Irvan (guitar), and Nick Laws (drums). The award-winning rock and roll band has enjoyed success throughout western Kentucky and the surrounding area, entertaining audiences with their powerful vocals, driving guitar riffs, and superb musicianship. Their combination of classic rock styles and timely lyrics create a sound completely unique to the group. The Spirits previewed a song from their upcoming album at the beginning of the interview, titled "New Needle." "New Needle" was also the Spirits' entry into the 2018 WKMS Battle of the Bands, which carried them to the finals at Paducah's Maiden Alley Cinema.
The band is in the process of recording a full length studio album at Paducah's Loud and Clear Studio with recording engineer, Shelby Preklas. Fans can expect a similar sound to music the Spirits have released in the past, with a few new tweaks. "The new material is very reminiscent of what we've done before, but it's taken on a new life a little bit," Dodd explains. "It's not going to be quite as bare-bones-rock and roll as we've seen before. It's going to have some different textures." The Old Spirits also plan to expand their reach and take their band to the next level with help from Memphis management group, Nitro Red Orchard.
