Best of Show at the AQS Show Goes to Veteran Quilter from the Netherlands

Lance Dennee

The 30th anniversary American Quilter’s Society Quilt Show and Contest Best of Show goes to Ted Storm, a quilter from the Netherlands.Meredith Schroeder, President of the American Quilter’s Society, was  complimentary of Storm's work.

“It’s utterly fantastic, it’s all appliqued, hand quilted," Schroeder said. "It took her like 5 years to make it.  And, it’s mostly flowers, very bright flowers, all around the outside edge and the center part is completely hand quilted all the way across it in double rows.”

According to Schroeder, Storm challenged herself by using plaids for the first time, adding colorful flowers, blue delft and hand quilting. Storm could not attend the show because she was on quilters' retreat in Germany.

The awards ceremony kicks off the the annual show in Paducah which runs through Saturday.

Schroeder says this year's event should impress visitors with the amount of quilts and diversity in the exhibits.

"They’re going to see 400 exhibit quilts," Schroeder said. "They’re going to see quilts from Egypt made by Egyptian men who are here demonstrating. They’re going to see quilts of valor, which are quilts that are made to be given away to our servicemen who have come home and are wounded."

Registration has increased for this year's show, now in its 30th year.
