MAC Hosting Seed Documentary This Weekend, 'European Vacation' at Dry Ground

Collective Eye Films/Warner Bros.

Paducah's Maiden Alley Cinema is gearing up for its biggest event of the year, Oktoberfest, taking place next weekend, but first, the nonprofit arthouse theater is hosting a documentary about the seed industry. John Null caught up with MAC's programming director, John Holt, to discuss what's ahead at Maiden Alley.

Seed: The Untold Story is about the difficulties farmers are facing as industrial farming has drastically reduced the number of seed varieties. It's directed by Jon Betz and Taggart Siegel and executive produced by Academy Award-winning actress Marisa Tomei. The movie features interviews with Jane Goodall, Vandana Shiva, Andrew Kimbrell, Winona LaDuke and Raj Patel.

"People everywhere are waking up to the vital importance of seeds for our future," the film's website reads. "In recent months, March Against Monsanto protests have rallied millions in more than 400 cities and 50 countries to the cause of seed freedom. Ballot initiatives to label genetically modified foods have been proposed in U.S. cities from California to Connecticut—a direct threat to the profits of the Gene Giants and their Big Food cronies. Seed libraries, community gardens, and a new generation of passionate young farmers are cropping up to shift the balance toward a more sustainable and sovereign seed paradigm. A David and Goliath battle is underway, and the stakes couldn’t be higher."

Seed: The Untold Story starts Friday, October 7 and plays through Sunday, October 9.

On Monday, October 10, Maiden Alley is screening Frank Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption, as part of the Faith in Film series. Then, on Wednesday, MAC is presenting National Lampoon's European Vacation in a special Movie on Tap screening at Paducah's Dry Ground Brewing Company to kick off the Oktoberfest activities. The movie, which follows the Griswolds on a European tour that takes them to an actual Bavarian Oktoberfest celebration, will be projected outside Dry Ground beginning at 7 p.m.
