A phone scammer is targeting senior citizens in McCracken County pretending to be affiliated with the local sheriff’s department.

The department said in a release the caller is informing individuals they have missed jury duty and that there is a warrant out for their arrest. The scammer reportedly has some victim personal information. The caller is instructing people to forward payments through a transfer service at Kroger.

McCracken County Sheriff’s Department said they will never recall warrants or ask for payments over the phone.

Captain Matt Carter recommends people to call or go to the local department to double check if something is a scam before making a suspicious transaction.

Matt Markgraf joined the WKMS team as a student in January 2007. He's served in a variety of roles over the years: as News Director March 2016-September 2019 and previously as the New Media & Promotions Coordinator beginning in 2011.
