The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a new mobile website with real-time water information for the Cumberland River watershed, which could be useful for boaters this holiday weekend.
The website, called River Status, provides instant access to stream gauges, rain gauges, water quality data and lake information.
Water Management chief for the Corps’ Nashville District Bob Sneed said the website could be useful for those visiting Lake Barkley.
“You could look and see what the current lake level is and then, based on your experience with that body of water, have an idea of any hazards that could come up as far as obstructions in the water, that kind of thing," Sneed said.
Fishing enthusiasts can use the website to check how much water is being released from the dam on a particular day. Additionally, potential home buyers could also use River Status to see if a property lies in or near a Federal Emergency Management Agency-identified flood zone.
The Corps partnered with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency in the website’s creation, which was developed over the last two and a half years and federally funded at a cost of $150,000.
