Formation Of Special Group On Library Renovation Announced At Chamber Breakfast

Liam Niemeyer

Government leaders from Calloway County and Murray gave their take on the state of the region and set goals for the new year at a breakfast Tuesday morning held by the Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce. In those speeches, the newly-elected Calloway County judge executive also announced the formation of a special group on county library renovations.

Calloway County Judge Executive Kenny Imes and Murray Mayor Bob Rogers each took turns laying out their vision for their respective governments. Both Imnes and Rogers said they want to prioritize building infrastructure which include upgrading the county courthouse and building more sidewalks in Murray.

Imes announced at the end of the breakfast he was forming a special group of citizens to give a recommendation on whether the county library board should renovate its current site or move into a former bank building in downtown Murray.

“This interested group of citizens will offer a variety of perspectives and expansion, as well as the city and the county. They have experience in budgeting, building and community service,” Imes said.

Imes said he is forming the group to bring an end to the controversy that has surrounded the library renovation plans. He won’t answer questions about the group until he announces the members later this week.

Mayor Bob Rogers said he expects Imes to select people with relevant experience on the issue.

“He’s more interested in backgrounds. A finance person, a construction person,” Rogers said.

Calloway County Public Library Director Mignon Reed said the library board will welcome the group’s future recommendation.

“As far as I’m concerned, we’re looking forward to it and hope that it will be something positive for us,” Mignon Reed said.
