Winners will be announced monthly and receive a cash price, an award presentation during the Calvert City Council meeting, and their work will be published in Lake News.

Calvert City's Youth Voice has announced a new monthly writing contest for grades K-12. Young writers can submit original works of any style for the chance to win a cash prize and have their work published in Lake News.

Youth Voice is now accepting submissions for their new monthly contest. Young writers between the ages of 5 and 18 can submit original work in any creative writing style, including short stories, essays, or poems. One winner will be awarded monthly. The deadline to submit work will be on the 5th of each month, beginning August 5th. The contest is not limited to Calvert City residents; writers from across the region are encouraged to submit their original work.

"Communication is the ability to express ideas. The challenge of expressing opinions or emotions clearly and concisely with purpose are challenges far beyond English and writing classes. Calvert City wants to encourage its youth to speak up and speak out," said Calvert City's Mayor, Mr. Lynn Jones. "Today's generation has thought-provoking ideas and strong opinions. We need to hear those ideas and visions. I hope the writing contest encourages many to open their souls and bravely express their hearts," he followed.

Monthly winners will receive $50 and an ad in the Lake News with their published work. They will also be recognized at the Calvert City Council Meeting, which is held on the second Monday of each month at City Hall.

When submitting your entries, please follow these guidelines:

  • Word limit of 1,000 words
  • Illustration of stories are allowed but not mandatory and will not alter the results of the judging
  • Work must be the original work of the author
  • Late entries will be applied to the following month's contest

Please click here to submit entries. Paper copies can be mailed to Calvert City Hall at P.O. Box 36, Calvert City, KY 42029. Paper copies must complete the entry form and include it in the envelope with the entry. The contest is free to enter. Multiple entries will be accepted.
