Brrr! Perhaps the chilliest fundraising event of the year, the Western Kentucky Plunge Polar Plunging pits brave Kentuckians against the icy waters of Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park to raise funds for the Special Olympics. The event, held this year on February 15, has grown to more than 500 participants and raising more than $100,000 each year. Kate Lochte speaks with coach and coordinator Laura Miller of Murray about the event.
Laura Miller stops in to talk to Kate about the Western Kentucky Polar Plunge and Polar 5K that contribute to the success of the Western Kentucky Special Olympics team. The team consists of individuals ranging from eight years old to 60 years old, and they are involved in sports such as cheerleading, track & field and golf. Miller also recalls positive experiences she has had with her athletes, and describes just how rewarding it is to work with the Special Olympics; she encourages other citizens to volunteer at some point or another.
"It speaks volumes about Murray and Calloway County that parents are really eager to get their children involved in the program as unified partners and join in... You know, you just can't help but be a better person after spending time with some of these athletes."
