Memorial Service to Remember Victims of Heath High School Shooting 20 Years Ago

McCracken County Schools is hosting a memorial service next month to reflect on 20 years since a high school shooting in west Kentucky.

The service is in the Heath Middle School gym on December 1, marking 20 years since the day of the incident at Heath High School.

The event will include a ribbon cutting for the new location of the Heath High School Memorial.

The McCracken school board approved earlier this year to move the memorial to a more accessible location. Family members of the victims led a redesign and restoration effort.

On December 1, 1997, fourteen-year-old Michael Carneal killed three girls and injured five others at a prayer meeting outside of the school. He is serving a life sentence.

Heath High School closed in 2013 upon the opening of McCracken County High School.

The service begins at 9 a.m.

Matt Markgraf joined the WKMS team as a student in January 2007. He's served in a variety of roles over the years: as News Director March 2016-September 2019 and previously as the New Media & Promotions Coordinator beginning in 2011. Prior to that, he was a graduate and undergraduate assistant. He is currently the host of the international music show Imported on Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
