Little Free Libraries In Hopkinsville ‘Belong To The Community’

The Little Free Libraries Program in Hopkinsville is still going strong more than a year after it began.

Program steward Beth Roberts discovered the program through bookcrossing.com, where people can register books online and track them.

She says people have been adding books to the program aimed at promoting literacy and increasing accessibility. Roberts says the community maintains supply and returns through a take-one-leave-one system.

"Almost everybody who enjoys reading probably has some books that they’re never going to read again or that they want to share," Roberts said. "And to me, that’s the community involvement. Every one of the Little Free Libraries actually belongs to the community."

The Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation Department installed four libraries last spring. The libraries were installed in Little River Park, the downtown fire station, and the Rail Trail.

Despite an instance of vandalism where one of the Rail Trail libraries was pulled out of the ground, the program still manages to get books into the hands of the people.

Since then, three more have popped up in town - two of them independent of the program. According to littlefreelibrary.org, there are more than 70,000 registered book-sharing boxes in 85 countries.
