Update: Autopsies performed on a woman and infant who died in a Lyon County house fire Monday morning determined both died of smoke inhalation. The deceased victims are Amber Girkant, 29, and Nathaniel Vinson. The latter was just shy of nine-months-old.

Steven Vinson, 27, remains in stable condition at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. The infant is the son of Steven Vinson and Amber Girkant. The father rescued a two-year-old girl from the house before the fire became too intense. That child was treated on scene and was released to her grandfather.

KSP said an initial investigation indicated the fire began in the living room. Foul play has not been determined at this time. An investigation continues.

Original Story:

A woman and an infant died in a house fire in Lyon County early this morning.

Kentucky State Police received a 911 call at about 6:54 a.m. involving a mobile home fire in Kuttawa.

A 27-year-old male in the residence rescued a two-year-old female, but the fire was too intense for him to re-enter.

The man was transported to a local hospital and later flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center. The child was treated at the scene and released to her grandfather.

A 29-year-old woman and a nine-month-old infant were both unable to escape. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Police say the fire appears to have begun in the living room.

The incident is under investigation by KSP and the Kentucky Fire Marshal’s Office.
