CASA Program Coming to West KY Community

via childadv.net

A program that advocates for children in abuse and neglect cases will be coming to Christian County.

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. The program is made up of judge-appointed volunteers to research cases, review documents, and report to the court what’s best for the child.

Executive Director Virginia Erxleben said the volunteers act as extra eyes for the judge and that the Department for Community Based Services is overworked. The program allows for the volunteers to do part of their jobs.

“The focus of the program is actually to find permanency for children whether it’s returning the child back to the biological parent, placing the child with a relative, just whatever we need to do for the best interest of the child,” Erxleben said.

Erxleben said Christian County currently has 374 cases. This could be due to being attached to Oak Grove and Fort Campbell, which Erxleben says adds to the numbers.

This will be the 22nd program of its kind in the Commonwealth.
