[Audio] Regional Authors Gathering at Weaks Senior Center for Meet & Greet

Murray Calloway County Senior Citizens Center, Facebook

Ann Uddberg and Lynn Bartlett speak with Austin Carter on Sounds Good about an upcoming Meet & Greet with local authors at the Weaks Senior Center on Friday.

The Weaks Senior Center Genealogy Club is bringing in authors Geoff Baggett, Lynn Bartlett, Justice Bill Cunningham, Steve Schneiderman, Dr. Bill Mulligan, and Linda Scott, who have published books regarding the history and culture of the region.

Bartlett published a book of her photography titled Tobacco Barns of Western Kentucky and Things Along the Way. She says she wanted to document the unique part of western Kentucky culture before the barns collapse from age or are replaced by new metal barns.

Most of the [barn owners] gave me a little history like how they lived as children in that barn while the house was built. Even though a lot of these barns are very obsolete, they farm around them, they build their houses, they don’t take them down because they are a part of their families history and heritage and culture and they want to keep that,” Bartlett said. “My goal was to try to get people to restore them… just so that we can really maintain that history and culture unique to western Kentucky.”

Uddberg says authors will be available to sign books and speak with readers. She says the gathering of regional authors is also a time for them to hear ideas for future work.

It gives the authors some incentive to produce more. I mean, we have literally millions of stories out there that are ready to be produced, to be written about, to make us aware of who we are and why we’re here and how we got here,” Uddberg said.
