This Oscar-winning epic traces the arc of the 20th century through the life of an avant-garde Hungarian architect who survives the Holocaust and immigrates to the US. A chance encounter with a wealthy American allows him to begin working as an architect again, but his increasingly complex relationship with his patron threatens to compromise his artistic vision—and takes this maximalist film to surprising and shocking places. Screened with an intermission. With the support of the Department of History.
