Martin Police Department, Facebook

A teacher at South Fulton High School in Tennessee is under investigation for alleged statutory rape following a complaint made by a student.

An initial report from the Martin Police Department names 25-year-old James McDaniel as an offender in an incident involving sexual contact with a 17-year-old student.

According to the report, Obion County Sheriff’s Department Officer David Lamb said there was evidence that sexual contact had been occurring “between this student and an adult male subject who was employed as a teacher at the school.”

Chief Don Teal said the incident is under investigation and no arrests have been made.

Director of Obion County Schools Russ Davis said McDaniel has resigned. According to the school’s website, McDaniel taught wellness, physical education, ACT Prep and football.

Teal said police may seek an indictment of the suspect during the May term of the Grand Jury.
