The 2013 Western Kentucky Polar Plunge is set for February 16, at Kentucky Dam Village. The event is the major annual fundraiser for Special Olympics Kentucky, with several plunges held across the state.
And, yes, it’s what it sounds like: A group of silly, happy people jumping in to freezing cold water for a good cause. Murray-Calloway Special Olympics Coordinator Laura Miller, and Coach Chuck Williams joined Angela Hatton at WKMS's studios to talk about the plunge and Special Olympics.
Miller says there are around 1,000 Special Olympians in western Kentucky, competing in dozens of sports, from track and field to golf.
Coach Chuck Williams is also a special education teacher, and he says he loves the joy he gets out of leading the athletes, and traveling with them to competitions around the state.
Miller and Williams note that the Polar Plunge is more than a fundraiser. It's also a way to educate the public on what Special Olympics is about.
The western Kentucky group is starting a new program to team disabled kids with non-disabled ones. Miller says that program is designed to overcome differences, and build friendships among children.
