Kentucky State Police reports a western Kentucky man died Monday evening after incurring injuries from multiple collisions.
According to a press release issued by KSP, troopers responded to the 41 mile marker on Interstate 69 at approximately 10:15 p.m. Monday at the request of an investigation initiated by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.
Troopers concluded William L. Nelson, 35, of Dexter, Kentucky, was operating an orange, 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the northbound lanes of I-69 when he struck a deer. Nelson and his passenger, 22-year-old Asia D. Sledd of Murray, were ejected from the motorcycle. Nelson landed in the right lane, and Sledd landed on the shoulder.
Because it was late and dark, the press release states, 25-year-old Kermit Peck of Camden, Tennessee, struck Nelson.
After an unknown amount of time, Nelson was struck again by 67-year-old Michael Martin of Gilbertsville, Kentucky.
Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Marshall County Coroner’s Office who also requested a toxicology report.
Marshall County EMS transported Sledd from the scene to Marshall County Hospital where she was later airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Nelson was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, while Sledd was not.
Neither Peck nor Martin were injured during the collisions.
The northbound lanes of I-69 were closed for approximately five hours for collision reconstruction. The investigation is ongoing by KSP Sergeant James Phelps.
