“Vampire Cleanup Department”. Hong Kong, 2017.
Directed by Sin-Hang Chiu and Pak-Win Yan. Starring Babyjohn Choi, Min Chen Lin, and Siu-Ho Chin.
In Cantonese with English subtitles. NR, 93 minutes.
In this horror/comedy/romance/martial arts mashup, a young street sweeper with a tragic past joins a government agency that fights vampires in Hong Kong. As he trains to become a vampire hunter, he falls in love with a seemingly innocent vampire girl, who may or may not be able to regain her humanity. Drawing on Chinese vampire mythology, Daoist spirituality, and Western zombie and vampire films, Vampire Cleanup Department—like Hong Kong itself—lives at the intersection of multiple worlds.
